School of Physical Education



School of Physical Education (PE) is developed out of the former Physical Education Research Department which was founded in 1952, and in 1992, the school was changed to the Department of Physical Education. After 55 years of efforts, the school has continually in its faculty force, teaching quality, competitive strength and research ability. In January 2006, to meet the requirement of a comprehensive university, the university set up the School of Physical Education, composed of School Office, Public Sports Department, Competitive Sports Department, Basic Physical Theory Department, Sports Centers and Science of Human Movement Laboratory, with the major and non-major teaching teams of Xinghua Talent Project, and a research base for the sports industry of Guangdong Province. The School undertakes the physical education courses, extra-curriculum exercises, training and competitions for 39,000 undergraduates and graduates in the university.
 
The School has a strong faculty, mainly middle-aged and young teachers who are proficient in physical education and high-level physical training. Among 63 full-time teachers, there are 4 professors and 26 associate professors, including 5 with doctor's degree and 23 with master's degree. In addition, there are 4 world-class referees and 10 national-level referees in the school. In the past two years, the school has invested almost 300 million Yuan to build new sport facilities. There are 3 multi-functional gymnasiums of international standards, 3 swimming pools, 5 sports field, 1 over-water golf, 1 rock climbing wall and more than 100 courts of basketball, volleyball, tennis, badminton and shuttlecock, etc. The School leads its counterparts in the country in terms of quantity, quality and functions of sports facilities.
 
Since the establishment of South China University of Technology, much emphasis has been laid on sports and remarkable achievements have been made. The School has been awarded with many honorary titles for its prominent accomplishments, such as the Advanced Unit in physical education conferred by the Ministry of Education and the State General Administration of Sport. Designatedd by the State General Administration of Sport, SCUT is one of the pilot universities training high-level sports teams. At present there are 6 programs in track and field, basketball, volleyball, football, pingpong and tennis. They have persevered in training all the year round and have made outstanding results, obtaining as many as 1,000 gold medals in the provincial and national competition, the President Cup in the National University Games for four times running, and a number of top prizes in the World University Games, Asian Games and other major international competitions. The competitive sports level of SCUT has been in the lead among domestic colleges. Sports have become a highlight and a trademark of the University.
